NEW MATAMORAS — The traffic light at Ohio 7 and Main Street will be covered a week from today and signage installed to make it a two-way stop.

That could be the way the intersection stays if data collected during a 90-day study period supports the change.

Earlier this year, it was determined that the signal equipment and supports need replaced due to age and condition, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Transportation District 10. The cost to do so is estimated between $150,000 to $200,000, with the Village of New Matamoras to foot the bill.

ODOT and the village agreed to an analysis of the site. None of the criteria that warrant a traffic signal were met, according to the analysis, which recommends a two-way stop as the most appropriate traffic control strategy.

The Village Council voted in June to support the state’s recommendation, even though some members and residents have reservations, Councilman John K. Schmidt said.

“The funding’s not there, and the state says there’s no need for it,” he said. “So the village has no choice but to follow the state’s ruling.”

Schmidt said some residents are “afraid if the traffic light is removed, there’s going to be a lot of accidents.”

According to the release, the intersection will remain a two-way stop if information collected during the 90-day study period confirms the signal is no longer needed.
